Products/Services Engaged

Established in 1991, the Romanian Air Traffic Services Administration (ROMATSA) provides air traffic services for general air traffic in Romania. ROMATSA operates on the basis of economic management and financial autonomy, carrying out specific functions related to air traffic management.

ROMATSA’s aim is to create a safe operational environment for air traffic in the Romanian airspace. It operates 16 control towers and is headquartered in Bucharest.

ROMATSA’s main activity is providing air navigation services, including communication, navigation and surveillance, aeronautical information services and maps, and meteorological services.

In 2015, SITA FOR AIRCRAFT worked with both ROMATSA and BULATSA to enhance air traffic communications in the Danube Functional Airspace Block (FAB), supplementing voice communications with robust datalink services.

Together, they enabled Controller Pilot Data Link Communication (CPDLC) services to control centers, under the Single European Sky initiative, working closely to facilitate communications across ATN.

Under the program, ATN routers and VHF ground stations were established across Romania and Bulgaria, allowing both ANSPs to implement datalink communication between aircraft pilots and ground controllers.

The initiative represented a key step towards the implementation of SESAR concepts such as the 4D Trajectory Data Link (4DTRAD) Service.

More recently, SITA FOR AIRCRAFT worked with ROMATSA to establish its multi-frequency VHF Data Link Mode 2 air/ground network infrastructure (VDLm2 MF) in Romania as part of a Europe-wide push to maximize datalink capacity.

“Our partnership with SITA FOR AIRCRAFT is a great step forward for the Danube FAB and moves us closer to the Single European Sky. We look forward to benefiting from the efficiencies and safety enhancements Data Link will bring.” – Ion-Aurel Stanciu, Director General, ROMATSA
